Homeopathy was discovered in the late 18th century Germany by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. After being frustrated with the standard methods of practice in that era, he searched for a safer and gentler approach of medicine. The word itself comes from the Greek words, " homoios " meaning "similar" and " pathos " meaning "suffering". The fundamental principle behind the healing powers of Homeopathic remedies is that "like cures like". This principle called the Law of similars essentially means that what will cause illness will cure illness. That is to say, a substance given in large doses to a healthy person will produce a specific set of symptoms, but when the same substance is given in homeopathically prepared doses to an ill person with similar symptoms, it will stimulate the body's innate healing mechanisms.
As part of their medical training, Naturopathic Doctors are trained in the use of Homeopathic remedies. Through this extensive education, Naturopathic Doctors utilize homeopathic remedies for virtually any acute or chronic illness and ailment. Homeopathic remedies are non-synthetic and are made from nontoxic extracts of plant, mineral and animal substances to aid the body and mind to heal itself on all levels and to regain physiological and psychological balance.
Homeopathy can be used for anyone and for any particular health concern. It is especially ideal for children, the aged, and in long-term treatment since it is virtually nontoxic and without any side-effects. Moreover, homeopathic remedies recognize that every individual is a unique and distinct being with wide variations from one another in terms of personality, biochemical and physiological processes, reactions and disease symptoms. In this light, a Naturopathic Doctor
can take a thorough homeopathic case in order to find the one unique remedy that exactly fits a specific person's symptoms. For example, a Naturopathic Doctor would not routinely prescribe the same headache remedy to every individual who came in with a migraine. Instead, one homeopathic remedy (among a list of several choices) would be prescribed based on the distinct set of symptoms unique to a particular individual. Thus, homeopathy treats the person as a whole.
Symptoms are believed to be the body's attempts at self-healing and that suppressing them will push the disease deeper into the body. With the correctly chosen remedy, the body's defense mechanisms are strengthened to self-repair and heal.
Homeopathy is one of the several modalities used in our clinic by our Naturopathic Doctors for acute and chronic illnesses. Indeed, homeopathic medicine can offer as a very viable alternative to address one's health concerns.
